To all Trade Unions, movements and individuals all over Europe
Comunicato di sostegno e solidarietà alle lotte degli insegnanti, degli studenti e dei lavoratori della Grecia.
We, the people working in La CGIL Che Vogliamo
(Federazione Lavoratori/lavoratrici Conoscenza - CGIL Italia)
express our solidarity with teachers, students and employees in Greece.
The Greek government, in compliance with EU and IMF directives, has imposed salary cuts, reductions on pensions, an increase of the retirement age limit and a downgrading of the public social support system. This has, as consequence, negative changes on teachers’ working conditions, the merging or closing down of school units, lack of public support for research and innovation, etc. All of this is laying of the groundwork for a market-driven, business-oriented education.
These policies are under implementation across the whole of Europe! The Greek struggle is our struggle!
We believe that there is the need for coordinated actions all across Europe. All movements in Europe linked to schools, universities and research, as well as teachers, lecturers and students unions, parents and non-teaching staff organisations, and, more generally, all the various forms of association that are active in the field of education, must now take in their own hands the responsibility of working for a coordinated struggle.
It is our duty to reverse these policies and to defend public education for all everywhere in Europe.
